Private planes, helicopters, falling debris, birds, and contracting corrugated iron roofing from inside an abandoned hangar. A edifice sat on the edge of an airstrip in rural Hertfordshire, surrounded by forests, landfills, and derelict structures not unlike this one, I had walked past the space many times and missed it, despite its overwhelming size. I noticed moss growing on a polystyrene block and also watched a blackbird dive from a tree and devour a wasp that had just emerged from its hole in the ground.
